About the Event

This heartfelt ceremony commemorates the 6-year anniversary of the reinterment of the Anson Street Ancestors and serves as a remembrance and a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of our community as we honor those who came before us.


Last year, community members collected soil from African descendant burial grounds in Charleston. These sites represent a diverse history, including vanished urban locations, plantation graveyards on private land, and cemeteries associated with burial societies and churches affected by gentrification. Each handful of soil tells a story, connecting us to our past and inspiring us to advocate for justice and remembrance in the present.


On May 4, 2025, community members will place the gathered soil into an urn for use in the memorial fountain basin, honoring both enslaved and free Africans at these sacred locations. This act will symbolize our respect for their memory and our commitment to ensuring that their…
